The Great Lakes And Global Warming Could Result In Drastic Changes To The Entire Region

Posted by Adriana Noton under Travel Leisure

Over the last century there has been an explosion in human growth and innovation that has added to our lives through technology and has also expanded how we view and understand the world. Climate change has been receiving increased attention in the media and scientific community. Irrespective of the cause, there is a truth in the observation that the Earth is experiencing an increase in temperature that will have far reaching consequences. The Great Lakes and global warming will vastly alter the landscape and environment of that area of America in the coming future.

Already dealing with the onslaught of invasive species, global warming will only add additional pressure to the Great Lakes region. These vast reservoirs of fresh water account for twenty percent of the total amount of fresh water on the planet, a resource that will become scarcer in the future.

The importance of the region cannot be downplayed. Outside of the manufacturing of drinking water, it is also a huge producer of hydroelectric power, is a thoroughfare for shipping routes, as well as being a tourist attraction. A variety of species, both plant and animal, make their home along the shore and within the lakes themselves.

With all of these positives, there is a flipside to use and land development including air and water pollution and urban encroachment into habitats. Because of these issues, the region is more susceptible to being affected by global warming. Something as innocuous as climate change can reap disastrous results.

Increasing temperature will melt the ice cover that, at this point, is already quite thin along the lakes. No cover will increase the overall evaporation of the lakes and decrease overall water levels.

Water loss has already been occurring and it was found last year the Lake Superior’s levels were at their lowest in seventy seven years. If the lakes decrease by the purported additional meter in the future, shipping routes will be severely disrupted and the water itself will diminish in quality due to the concentration of pollutants. The travel industry such as cruises will also be negatively affected.

Efforts are underway to restore the Great Lakes with billions of dollars needed to update the antique sewage systems as well as cleaning up the polluted sediment that already exists. Building up the wetland environments at the edges of the lakes will create a natural water cleanser and impediment to invasive species.

There are more repercussions from climate change other than decreasing water levels and that includes an increase in the number and ferocity of storms and drought periods. In response to these weather extremes viral transmissions can increase and pollution runoff may be increased. Within the lakes there may be more dead zones, places where there is no oxygen because of algae overgrowth.

By the end of this current century it is believed that the temperature of the great lakes region will increase by two to four degrees, with precipitation increasing by 25%. Lake levels are predicted to fall anywhere from 1.5 to 8 feet.

Making a better tomorrow really does mean being better today. Allowing for proactive measure while being realistic about future effects can mean that humans can restore luster to the Great Lakes region.

These luxurious Toronto boat cruises offer boundless fun, adventure, and excitement for all ages. Whether you are a tourist, vacationer, or adventure seeker, you will enjoy the fireworks cruises for their enriching amenities and cozy accommodations.

Booking A Package Holiday – Information & Advice

Are you considering taking a family holiday this year? If you’ve been casually reviewing the many available family holiday packages advertised, you’re no doubt looking for a great deal in a great destination. There are a few things you should consider before making a decision.

- When did you want to go? Is it important to you to go during the summer when your children are not in school, or can you go some other time of the year when prices are lower and more may be available.

- Perhaps you have a short window of holiday opportunity. Do you have limited time off from work? Perhaps you have other things going on that necessitate you be home by a specific date. If this is true, you must consider how far you want to travel. Spending half of your holiday traveling, just to turn around and come back is not the optimum vacation.

- Have you decided where to holiday? Your family will surely have some ideas. There are plenty of places to go where your children can learn something and where they might be able to practice their foreign language skills.

- What services and accommodations are important to you? Are you an adventurous family? Can you not live without a pool or being near the sea? Before you even start looking you should have a list of what you’re looking for in a holiday.

- Will you book online or with a high street travel agent? If you want to get the cheapest possible price then you’ll probably be better off booking online, which will also save you time. However, if you have specific needs or requirements, or want expert travel advice, then a traditional high street travel agent should be your first port of call.

- There are expenses to remember when budgeting your holiday: travel insurance, and car rental or taxis, etc. It will not enhance your vacation if you suddenly realize that you are way over your holiday budget.

- How early do you want to make a booking? You can get some great deals by leaving things to the last minute, but then you run the risk of not being able to find something at your first choice destination. How late you can leave it therefore depends on how flexible you are on where you go.

Now that you’ve seen our list of what you need to “know-to-go”, you’ll need to make some decisions. There are some great cheap package holidays available right now, so what’s stopping you? Make those plans!

Car Hire Has Many Benefits Over Public Transport.

Posted by Dr Aus Car under Vacation Rentals

The only time you should choose to use public transportation like buses and cabs over a Car Rental is if you only have to go a few blocks and you do not have a lot of luggage with you. While going a short ways would make sense in a cab or bus, going a long ways makes better sense while driving your own rental car.

When you plan to travel to a destination that is a good ways from where you live or where you are at the moment, you may wonder what would be the cheapest way to go. While some routes are the cheapest going by bus, you might also want to consider the thought of riding that far with a group of people that you do not know.

When you are taking your children with you on a long trip, then you should never even consider public transportation. With all the luggage that you will have with just one child, you are going to be in a fix on a bus. With children, you will need a comfortable ride. You can have this if you rent a small van. You could get a DVD player in it and have something to help to keep the kids occupied while you are driving.

When you are travelling with a small child, you are going to need a car seat. This is a law in most countries. The best way to go is through a rental car service because you can also get a car seat. This will keep you from having to lug along your own from home. You may not be able to use a car seat on a bus or other kind of public transportation.

One the best parts of taking a long trip is being able to stop and eat whenever you want. If you are riding a bus, the best you will be able to do about is if you did not forget to bring along candy bars or chips in your bag. If you are driving a rental car, you will be able to stop whenever you need a bite to eat or a cold drink to wake up.

Being as comfortable as you can be while riding a long ways is going to determine how you feel once you do reach your destination. You need to be able to stop and stretch whenever you need to. On a bus ride, this is not possible either. The bus stops at certain points to give everyone a break at the same time. Not everyone always needs a break at the same time.

Sightseeing needs to be done at your own leisurely pace. You will not be able to do this while riding a bus. If you have your own car, you could stop at any place you want and when you want to snap pictures or to just have a look at a beautiful place for awhile. You will get a whole lot more out of a trip by driving a car than you would if you were riding a bus.

The kind of comfort you need while driving or riding is imperative to how well you enjoy your trip. If you have kids, this is especially true. Make the right choice of a car hire for those times you are going on a trip.

Traveling From The UK To Bordeaux

Posted by Tom Martens under Travel Leisure

UK tourists arrive at the French city of Bordeaux on convenient flights every day from London, Birmingham, or Manchester. Situated in southwest France, Bordeaux is the region’s premier city, boasting a population of about one million. Its airport is Bordeaux-Merignac.

The gentle climate makes Bordeaux popular with tourists from the UK. While summers may run hot and long, the rest of the year is quite mild. Bordeaux is a port on the Atlantic, and about nine million metric tons of cargo passes through each year. Visitors come to the port to enjoy the view and also to enjoy the mild weather. Bordeaux’s main rail station is the Gare de Bordeaux Saint-Jean. The station offers high-speed service trips to Paris taking about three hours. There is also extensive local tram, bus, and taxi service.

Ask anyone to name one thing they know about Bordeaux and most likely they will mention wine. Bordeaux is one of the top wine producing areas in the world, with almost 300,000 miles of vineyards. Its red wines are made from a blend of grapes, most commonly from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec.

The red wine produced near Bordeaux is usually referred to as claret. Wine makers in the region also make white wine and dessert wines, but these are only about 10 per cent of total production. Some of the world’s most expensive vintages are produced near Bordeaux, but so are everyday table wines of extraordinary quality. Almost all Bordeauxs are blended wines.

Bordeaux is world famous for its wines, but the area is also home to a booming aeronautic industry, as well as major research in the area of lasers and laser technology development. Thousands are employed in both industries. However, tourism is a big industry as well, mostly because of the vineyards and winemaking.

Bordeaux is also known as a key architectural center, boasting one of the larger collections of eighteenth century buildings in Europe. Among its more famous sites are the Place de la Bourse, the church of the Holy Cross, the Saint Andre Cathedral, the Seruin Basilica, the Saint Michel Basilica, and the Church of St. Pierre.

Tourists also enjoy shops, restaurants, cafes, gardens, parks, and many festivals in Bordeaux. Home to the National Opera of Bordeaux, Bordeaux was the first city in France to found an architectural and research center.

The center is called Arc en Reve and it remains one of the most respected and popular architecture and research centers in all of France. Bordeaux is also home to a lively music, with plenty of live music venues located throughout the city for visitors to enjoy.

The climate, the architecture, the culture, and the wines make Bordeaux an outstanding place to visit and enjoy.

Why You Need A GPS AND A Compass

Posted by Jonathan (JJ) Smith under Travel Leisure
No Comments

Many people, mistakenly believe handheld GPS units completely replace the old standby — a handheld compass (and its map companion). For short hikes on your home turf, perhaps, but for serious outdoor activities, here are three reasons why you should bring your compass and map.

Determining Directions with GPS Only Works while Moving

If you are standing on top of a mountain trying to figure out which direction you are facing, you can forget getting an accurate direction from a GPS unit. The navigation arrow will bounce all over the place.

Some handheld GPS units and newer iPhone models have built-in electronic compasses that work independently of GPS satellite communications through a technique called magnetic induction. These electronic compasses detect the Earth’s magnetic field, producing the same result you would get with an analog compass. Accuracy of sophisticated electronic compasses for marine navigation can be very high (to match the 4-digit price tags), but don’t expect more than 2 to 5 degrees of accuracy with your handheld GPS or mobile device compass.

Distant Terrain Features are Easier to Work With when Using Map and Compass

The overview you get from studying a map, which always displays its finest-scale features, provides great information about distant features that you may be able to recall when you need to. GPS screens either have to be panned or zoomed, or both, to show you the same information. So a good old-fashioned paper (laminated) map is a must for adventurers. Unfortunately GPS units and phones make poor protractors for plotting courses on a paper map. A baseplate compass does the job perfectly.

GPS Is Power Hungry

Finally, the possibility of a malfunction is much smaller with a handheld compass. Rugged GPS units rarely just stop working, but it does happen — especially when they get dropped on hard surfaces. They also go through batteries very quickly if you are referring to them constantly. A better solution is to use your GPS power sparingly and refer to your battery-free compass often.

A Beginner’s Guide To Surviving A Santa Barbara Wine Tour

Posted by Claire Anderson under Travel Leisure
No Comments

If it is your first time to go on a wine tour in Santa Barbara, you must equip yourself with basic knowledge on what goes on inside the tasting room. Wineries in Santa Barbara may have different rules and regulations, but this article will help you on some of the important things that you need to know.

Upon entering the tasting room, a friendly host will greet and guide you through the whole process. The first thing that he or she would normally do is to set up the wines and the wine glasses. If this is already set up before hand, the host will then immediately proceed in explaining the wines that are available for tasting and if it would cost you anything for each glass of wine.

Wineries have different set up in terms of the tasting fee. There are wineries that apply a fee in each glass of wine. Some of them may give a complimentary glass for souvenir along with the fee. If this is the case, it is normal to share a glass of wine.

Wine tasting would usually start with the white wine. The host will then ready you for the red wine and finish with the dessert wine. Take your time in tasting each wine. Take one sip at a time and see how each wine tastes differently from the others.

On a wine tour, depending on your choices or the package available, you will be visiting about four to six wineries in a day. You might be overwhelmed with all the wine samples that will be handed to you. Be aware of your alcohol intake if you don’t normally drink wine. Alcohol content in red and white wine can vary considerably. But red wines tend to have more alcohol in it.

If you do like a particular wine and would probably want another glass, it is recommended not to ask to taste the wine for the second time. Usually, this would mean that you are interested in purchasing a whole bottle. This may not be the case with other wineries. You can always ask the host if you can have another glass.

You will be drinking and tasting various types of wines on the tour and of course, you won’t readily like all of it. If you find yourself tasting a wine that you don’t like, you can pour the wine in the buckets provided in the tasting room.

Another thing to expect is how drinking wine after another can affect your taste. You might not be able to savor the real taste and effect of a particular wine, if it is somehow affected by the previous wine. You can avoid this by drinking water after each glass. By drinking water, you are “cleansing” your palate. Plus, it also helps you to avoid a major hang over. Eating unflavored crackers can also help take off the taste of the previous wine.

If it’s your first time, don’t be hard on yourself. If there are things that confuse you or you don’t know what to do at all, don’t be afraid to ask. The host or anyone from the winery you’re visiting would be more than glad to answer your questions. They love explaining things and showing you around. With these things in mind, your experience in the tasting room would surely be pleasant and a memorable one.

Claire Anderson , a travel writer invites you to visit the beautiful wineries in Santa Barbara. Make the most out of your trip by hiring a chauffeured limousine from Limo 805. Limo 805 also provides limousine transportation services in Ventura County, Calabasas and Simi Valley.

There are literally hundreds of websites that provide free food coupons and coupons for just about any other kind. Usually these coupons are designed to help you save money while shopping online and off. In today’s tough economy, it is improbable that most of us will be able to increase our income.

Most companies do not give raises in the short term and many economists believe that the situation will be much worse before it gets better. This means that in order to create greater purchasing power, we all have to save money.

Stamps such as food stamps were created as a marketing tool that helps companies increase their market shares. Store food coupons can be found in many places, including on websites and in newspapers. Save yourself $ 20 every time you go to the store is very realistic and can add up to big savings in time. Most food stamp an expiration date, so you want to keep that in mind when you are saving.

Obviously, it does no good to try to use a coupon that had expired. Most people do not use coupons since they feel that the time needed to copy / print is too extreme. For some people this may be true but you should base its decision on its ability to produce more revenue in this tough economy.

If it’s going to be hard for you, you may want to put in the time to buy the coupon to their purchasing power is higher.

Food is one of the largest expenses for many families. My parents had six children and would go through several gallons of milk every day. This obviously was very expensive and if you ask my mom she will tell you that without coupons not have been able to do so.
